Project Highlight: From Traditional to Transitional

When it comes to transforming a kitchen, sometimes the goal isn’t just updating the look but blending elements of the old and new to create something timeless. That’s exactly what we did with this stunning remodel, moving from a traditional style to a more transitional, balanced design that suits today’s lifestyle while preserving classic charm.

Jenny Lyons of Dove Studio worked with the homeowner, Vanessa Mason, on the kitchen, main bath, and 5 other spaces in the house to transform the style from traditional and outdated into a clean transitional living space. Vanessa, a real estate agent and lover of interior design, shared with us her inspiration behind the renovation and her experience working with Dove Studio.

About the homeowner

I was born and raised in Miami, Florida, and am proud to say that I’m a first-generation American. After earning my Bachelor’s degree in Business I began successfully moving up the corporate ladder until my 18 months-old baby girl began calling our nanny mommy. This nearly broke my heart. I left my corporate career and created a new one that offered the flexibility I needed, not necessarily one that I worked less. I picked real estate because I truly believe that owning a home is the ultimate “America Dream”.

Throughout my 22 year career, I’ve realized that I’m an interior designer disguised as a realtor. I can’t walk into a house without envisioning a completely different floor plan. I can’t help it. Also, I’ve personally renovated three homes and designed and built two new homes. As a result, I stay with my buyers after their closing and help them reimagine their home. I have a list of contractors and vendors that I’ve personally used that help me with all my renovations.

I especially LOVE Jenny from Dove Studio. She recently helped me reimagine my kitchen and master bathroom and created a design so “out of the box” that it blew my mind! She also took all my ideas and worked with me to design my fireplace wall. Even my husband couldn’t believe the transformation. The house was stuck in the 90’ and he almost didn’t let me buy it because he just couldn’t see what I saw. Nobody else but Jenny could see the potential. I’m beyond thrilled and I owe it all to Jenny. I now partner with her and have referred her to all my clients. What a gem!

The Transformation Process

We started by reimagining the space with a more open layout, adding a spacious island to anchor the kitchen. This created a natural gathering spot, perfect for family meals and entertaining. The cabinetry was updated to a clean, classic style with a transitional twist, featuring shaker doors that work beautifully with traditional and contemporary design. To bring in that touch of modernity, we incorporated custom, integrated appliances, ensuring a seamless, polished look.

The Renovation

By removing the peninsula in the kitchen and pushing back the right wall to create a hidden walk-in pantry, space opened up for a large island. There was also a half-wall leading into the living room that was removed to create an open flow between the living room, dining room, and kitchen.

A Fresh Color Palette and Timeless Materials

The color palette was carefully chosen to balance warmth and sophistication. The homeowner replaced the hardwood floorings throughout the house with natural pine. We went with a soft, neutral tone for the cabinets, which adds light to the space and complements the natural stone countertops. The countertops, a beautiful blend of gray and white with subtle veining, add a luxurious touch without feeling overpowering. This fresh yet classic palette gives the kitchen a bright, welcoming feel that will never go out of style.

The main bathroom went through a complete renovation as well. The custom inset vanities include mullion glass doors and light poplar cabinetry. The light wood, natural sunlight, and neutral tones create a feeling of peace and relaxation in this space.

The secondary bathrooms, living room, and office were renovated as well and received cabinetry by Dove Studio.

Final Touches: Creating a Space That’s Built to Last

One of our favorite parts of transitional design is that it’s incredibly versatile and enduring. By combining elements of traditional charm with modern functionality, we created a space that our clients can enjoy for many years, regardless of changing trends. It’s not just about creating a kitchen that looks beautiful; it’s about building a space that truly feels like home.
