Project Highlight: Much Needed Change

Updated: Nov 15, 2023

Our clients had recently purchased this home and realized quickly that the kitchen did not meet the needs of their family. They have two small children and wanted a space that felt more open to allow everyone to spend time together even when they are in separate rooms.

After consulting with Dove's designer, Jenny Lyons, they decided to move forward with plans of moving around the powder bathroom and knocking down several walls to open up the space. Their new kitchen is open and bright with just the look they were going for.

A few reasons for change

The island blocked the flow from the kitchen to the living room and created very

tight walkways. If an island seat was pulled out, you would have to shimmy through the walkway.

The kitchen was blocked off from the living and dining rooms. The cabinet finish and door style weren’t to the homeowner's taste and all of the unnecessary arched walls further blocked the natural sunlight.

Our solutions

The refrigerator wall, which was blocking the natural sunlight, was removed to open up the space and let the light in. The powder bathroom was moved to create more space. In the before and after photos below, you can see the bay windows in both views to compare the difference.

Now the space flows seamlessly between the kitchen, living room, and dining room. Allowing for the chef of the hour to keep an eye on the kids doing homework in the dining room or playing in the living room. For their transitional style, Jenny led them to choose inset cabinets with a white finish and detailed shaker door style, the white perimeter was complemented by stained island cabinetry with the same shaker door style.

In the before and after plans above, notice the difference that moving the powder bathroom and removing the refrigerator wall made to completely change the layout of the space.

After the refrigerator wall was removed, the adjacent wall was extended to create more space for the new range wall and to make space for a hutch. See the before and after pictures below.

The new kitchen features Wolf appliances, inset cabinetry, and mullion glass doors. The homeowners couldn't be happier with how their new kitchen turned out.
