Roswell Transformation: A Much-Needed Layout Change

When our clients first moved into their new home, they quickly realized that the kitchen layout didn’t work for their family’s needs. With two small children, they envisioned a more open space that would allow everyone to spend time together, even if they were in different rooms.

After consulting with Dove’s designer, Jenny Lyons, they decided to move forward with plans to rearrange key elements of the home—relocating the powder bathroom and removing several walls—to create a bright, open, and functional kitchen that matched their style and lifestyle.

Why the Change Was Needed

The original layout was cramped and cut off from the main living spaces. The island, instead of being a welcoming hub, blocked the flow from the kitchen to the living room and created tight walkways. If an island seat was pulled out, anyone passing through had to squeeze by.

The kitchen was also separated from the living and dining rooms by walls and arched doorways that blocked natural light. Additionally, the cabinetry finish and style didn’t match the homeowners' taste, and the closed-off layout didn’t support their desire for a cohesive, family-friendly space.

Our Solutions

To create the open flow the family wanted, we removed the refrigerator wall that was blocking natural sunlight and relocated the powder bathroom to make more room. Now, light pours in, and the kitchen feels connected to the living and dining areas. In the before-and-after photos, you can see how the bay windows now enhance the space, providing an uninterrupted view that ties the rooms together.

This open layout means the chef can keep an eye on kids doing homework in the dining room or playing in the living room—perfect for a family that values togetherness. For the kitchen’s transitional style, Jenny guided the homeowners to select inset cabinetry with a white finish and a detailed shaker door style. The white perimeter cabinets are complemented by a stained island in the same shaker style, adding warmth and contrast.

In the floor plans, you’ll notice how moving the powder room and removing the refrigerator wall transformed the flow and functionality of the entire area. We extended the adjacent wall to make room for a new range wall and a stylish hutch, enhancing both storage and workspace.

Final Touches and Features

The new kitchen now includes top-of-the-line Wolf appliances, inset cabinetry, and beautiful mullion glass doors that elevate the room’s elegance. The clients couldn’t be happier with their new space, which is now as functional as it is stylish. It’s a transformation that perfectly blends form and function, creating a warm, inviting environment for this young family to enjoy for years to come.
